I don't know about you, but crazy quilting is one of my favorite techniques for making a quilt.  Every time one is made it comes out differently.  This pattern is broken down into six blocks with a total of 24 raw edge stitched  fused hummers, and lots of trumpet shaped flowers that attract them. As with all my patterns, you can do your own layout and move the appliques around to suit yourself, or you can follow my example quilt.  

This pattern has a beautiful printed 8 1/2" x 11" color cover.  On the reverse side of the cover there are five color photos showing closeups of individual hummingbirds so you can see clearly what can be achieved with a little thread painting on the throats.  All the beaks are satin stitched.  All the detail lines are on the drawings for reference.

My quilt measures 32" wide and 46" high. Yours could be larger or smaller by changing the number of hummingbirds included on your quilt.  I used mostly batik fabrics to make this quit, concentrating on having a good assortment of dark, medium and light colors for contrast.  

What makes this a crazy quilt?  It is all the odd shaped pieces of cotton fabrics sewn together in a strip, and pressed the seams open.  One long side of this strip is cut with a rotary cutter.  Another strip of fabrics sewn together with one long straight edge. Then the two groups are seamed together and pressed the seam open.  More strips of sewn cotton pieces with rotary cut long edges to this larger group.  This is a flip and sew technique...not half as complicated as you would think.  When the strips are 15" + square, Use the rotary cutter to bring them down to 15".  Then start making additional blocks to sew to this one. The only thing that is complicated is keeping the hummers in an upright position so when you look at the block on the wall, they make sense.   Yes, I sewed the hummers in place on the blocks before I attached the blocks in strips.  Then when you have all six 15" blocks sewn together, you find that you want to embellish them some more.  That is when you add the leaves or flowers that cross over from one block to another, filling in empty areas.  This project is so much fun, you won't want to put it down.
