Punch Needle Patterns

Punch Needle is an old craft that lots of people have taken up these days. It is portable.  A project will look like a mini hooked rug. You work it from the wrong side, creating loops on the right side.  The loops can be short, medium or long, cut or left loopy. You can do it anywhere without a lot of equipment.  You need a good hoop no bigger than  6”. A plastic hoop with a lip works better than a wooden one. Punch needle is done with a semi-open weave fabric called weavers cloth. You also need a 3-strand punch needle and a pattern. Punch needles also come in 1-stand and 6 strands. As I see a need for them, I will add them to our notions. The threads can be embroidery floss (3 strands) or one strand of #8 DMC pearl cotton or # 12 DMC or Valdani pearl cotton, or three strands of sewing threads like Sulky’s Blendables size 12 or 30. All of our designs come as a drawing, which can be traced onto fabric and my detailed instructions for getting started with punch needle and specific instructions for the particular pattern chosen.

WWW.valdani.com has a list of vendors which sell their pearl cottons. #12 size is preferred. Their size #8 is larger than DMC, but it is slightly slubby. Sometimes it jams in the needle hole.  You can cut the slubby section out, and start anew. The size of the thread does not matter when working up one of my designs.  DMC has just come out with some gorgeous hand dyed embroidery floss, which is another option.

If you download the pattern, you can print the drawing right onto your weavers cloth with your printer, instructions will be in the downloaded pattern...
