Giraffe Family - PATTERN

The Giraffe Family is sewn with raw edge appliqué technique: each appliqué is straight stitched around the edges.  When we designed this pattern there wasn't any giraffes skin fabric to be found, so we cut out all the spots and fused them onto a light colored giraffe and raw edge stitched everything down.  If we used cheater cloth for the giraffes the spots wouldn't be the right size. Little spots go on the faces and legs and larger spots go on the bodies. The giraffes are cut from off-white fabric and the spots are free form (they are drawn on the pattern, but you don't have to cut them out exactly) and fused on with Steam-A-Seam Lite to an appliqué sheet. When you fuse the giraffes and their spots as individual designs, you can then trim off the excess fabric from the spots so they match up with the edges of the giraffes, before you fuse the complete design to the background fabric. The ears and mane are 3-D. The sun was a cutout from the circular motif of the border print I used.  You can trace around a glass for a pattern, or find a similar circular motif.

Our kit has giraffe skin print in it to save you the fussy cutting the spots.

The quilt in the photo measures 25" x 23".
